Why are starlings considered an urban menace in downtown Toronto and the GTA suburbs ?

Starlings are even more of an urban menace than sparrows because they are physically bigger and more muscular, make sizable nests that can block gutters and downspouts, causing considerable flooding and structural damage, and gather in even larger flocks that can number up to tens of thousands of birds if allowed to get out of control.

Flocks of starlings have been known to overwhelm urban premises where their feces accumulates on the buildings’ exterior – which is both unsightly and also provides a breeding ground for bacteria, fungus and other pathogens that can cause allergies and otherwise seriously affect the health of humans who live and work inside.

Moreover, the uric acid in staring urine will quickly erode metal, wood, stone and other building materials, leading to widespread and costly structural damage.

In addition, starlings are far more aggressive and bullying than sparrows, actively evicting other birds from their carefully made nests and then taking over the premises in order to raise their own young.

They lay two broods of 4-5 eggs each year, of which around 8 will hatch and mature to adulthood – and starlings can easily live up to 7 years old or more.

Juvenile starlings like to gather together to form new flocks which may move en masse to take over a new neighbourhood.

If you notice a sudden invasion of starlings into your neighbourhood – particularly in the evening when they return from their daily feeding expeditions and gather to roost for the night – it is wise to take action as soon as possible in order to control their numbers before the problem escalates.

Sande Wildlife Control’s effective starling control techniques include:

  • Inspecting your property to find out how and why it is so attractive to starlings.
  • Eliminating nests and restricting access to previous nesting sites.
  • Blocking all crevices and gaps over 1 ½ inches in diameter that could provide access to new nesting sites in the future.
  • Frightening away flocks of starlings using timely and effective scare campaigns that incorporate sudden loud noises, distress calls, pyrotechnics and even birds of prey such as falcons.
  • Setting up capture netting in the dominant starling flight paths to catch inbound birds and prevent them from reaching their roosts.
  • Electrifying the ledges where starlings like to gather.

We have effectively used these and other humane techniques to eliminate urban starling and other bird pests from residential and commercial premises in Brampton, Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Richmond Hill, Maple, Thornhill, Vaughan, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Mississauga, Stouffville, Markham, Caledon, King City, downtown Toronto and other GTA suburbs.
